Los bustos de Zeus y Hera coronan la entrada posterior del Pabell\u00f3n 7 de la Feria de Congresos de Montjuic. Tras el estallido de la pandemia el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona habilita un albergue de emergencia en este recinto para acoger a las personas sin hogar mientras dure el estado de alarma. Manuel Mart\u00ednez, interesado en la historia a trav\u00e9s del patrimonio arquitect\u00f3nico, observa las figuras cada vez que sale al patio a fumar pero no tiene la mente como para poder indagar quienes son. Son d\u00edas convulsos donde tiene que aprender a convivir con personas de toda \u00edndole y situaciones de vida l\u00edmite.<\/p>\n

Se confin\u00f3 en ‘la Fira’ a finales de marzo para sortear las duras noches de fr\u00edo durmiendo en las calles de Barcelona. Fue de los primeros en entrar en el m\u00f3dulo A gestionado por la Cruz Roja, que ofrec\u00eda 225 camas. La afluencia de personas que buscaban refugio aquellos primeros d\u00edas de alarma fue tal, que en seguida a principios de abril se abre el m\u00f3dulo B , gestionado por la Fundaci\u00f3n Salut i Comunitat, con otras 225 plazas. Algunos no pasaban m\u00e1s que una noche o dos. El p\u00e1nico a las multitudes, la inseguridad al no haber divisiones entre las literas, la sensaci\u00f3n de control o la p\u00e9rdida de libertad eran los motivos que argumentaban quienes prefer\u00edan volver a la calle. Otros, no aceptaban las normas convenidas por las entidades para asegurar una convivencia en armon\u00eda y ten\u00edan que ser expulsados.<\/p>\n

Cien a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s el Pabell\u00f3n 7 fue construido por Puig i Cadafalch con la finalidad de acoger algunas muestras de la Exposici\u00f3n Internacional de 1929. Es bautizado como el Palacio de Victoria Eugenia en honor a la reina de aquella \u00e9poca, esposa de Alfonso XIII. La fusi\u00f3n de estilos arquitect\u00f3nicos en la fachada se mantiene intacta a d\u00eda de hoy, no sin embargo en el interior, que en sus inicios\u00a0tambi\u00e9n conten\u00eda figuras de la \u00e9poca cl\u00e1sica y en el momento actual se ha dejado di\u00e1fano. Por sus 14.000 m2\u00a0<\/sup>han pasado m\u00e1s de 1.300 hombres\u00a0<\/strong>en los nueve meses que ha estado en funcionamiento.<\/p>\n

Pere\u00a0<\/strong>vino de Ecuador para gestionar su jubilaci\u00f3n en plena pandemia, pero con la ralentizaci\u00f3n administrativa el dinero se acaba y se ve por primera vez a sus 66 a\u00f1os en la calle. Mohamed <\/strong>llega en patera a Gran Canaria en agosto huyendo de Mauritania y tras tocar tierra en Almer\u00eda toma un autob\u00fas que lo trae a Barcelona. Erasmo <\/strong>llega de Honduras en febrero con la esperanza de trabajar como carpintero, pero no encuentra m\u00e1s que trabajo espor\u00e1dico de alba\u00f1il en negro y acaba buscando chatarra con un carrito de supermercado por las calles de Barcelona. Baber\u00a0<\/strong>llega desde Pakist\u00e1n a pie, despu\u00e9s de atravesar durante seis meses pa\u00edses com Ir\u00e1n, Turqu\u00eda, Bulgaria, Macedonia, hasta que se forma como t\u00e9cnico reparador en una tienda de m\u00f3viles de un compatriota en Poble Sec. Antol\u00edn\u00a0<\/strong>llevaba 18 meses durmiendo en cajeros en Santa Coloma de Gramenet, cuando la polic\u00eda lo recoge, lo lleva primero a un albergue de acogida para personas sin techo, finalmente a la Fira. Antonio\u00a0<\/strong>tras pasar cinco semanas hospitalizado por coronavirus y otros problemas de salud, la arrendataria del piso donde tiene una habitaci\u00f3n alquilada le pide que no regrese pues ella es ciudadana de riesgo y no quiere exponerse al virus. Adnan<\/strong>, junto a su hijo de 20 a\u00f1os, llega a Barcelona desde Alemania con una orden de deportaci\u00f3n a Siria si no se establece en Barcelona seg\u00fan marca el tratado de acogida para refugiados de las Naciones Unidas. Abdel<\/strong>, de nacionalidad espa\u00f1ola, es un desempleado de larga duraci\u00f3n que a sus 55 a\u00f1os ha sido desahuciado en Ciutat Meridiana por ocupar un piso de un banco. Ricard\u00a0<\/strong>obtiene la libertad en plena pandemia despu\u00e9s de un a\u00f1o y medio en prisi\u00f3n por el impago de multas de tr\u00e1fico. Abandona la Fira porque un amigo de la infancia lo invita a Tenerife para ayudarle a rehacer su vida. Juan <\/strong>llevaba meses en la calle por la adicci\u00f3n a la coca\u00edna, donde se le iba su paga mensual por una invalidez permanente despu\u00e9s de a\u00f1os trabajando como marino. Consigue dejar la droga durante el confinamiento y ahora convive con su hija. Marc\u00a0<\/strong>trabajaba de camarero en negro antes del 14 de marzo, pero a falta de ingresos con el cierre se ve obligado a abandonar su hogar. Aprovecha su estancia en la Fira para reciclarse en la rehabilitaci\u00f3n de fachadas de altura, lo que le ha permitido encontrar trabajo.<\/p>\n

\u00abCada uno tenemos un curr\u00edculum vita que arrastramos\u00bb\u00a0<\/em>reconoce Manuel, despu\u00e9s de llevar varias semanas hospedado en una pensi\u00f3n en Ciutat Vella. Ahora ya puede pensar en la historia del Pabell\u00f3n n\u00ba 7 y lo que ha significado para \u00e9l este periodo de tiempo que espera sea un punto de inflexi\u00f3n en la tendencia que su vida hab\u00eda tomado en los \u00faltimos tiempos. \u00abTener un techo es algo impagable\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n

Seg\u00fan estad\u00edsticas del Ayuntamiento un 30% de los hombres acogidos en la Fira han sido de nacionalidad espa\u00f1ola, otro 30% comunitarios y el resto no comunitarios. El 55% estaba durmiendo en la calle antes de refugiarse dentro. El 45% proven\u00eda de habitaciones de alquiler, viviendas ocupadas o infraviviendas. El Pabell\u00f3n n\u00ba 7 ha estado abierto desde el 25 de marzo hasta el 23 diciembre. Los \u00faltimos 170 usuarios han sido trasladados a diferentes hoteles y residencias tras un acuerdo del Ayuntamiento para mejorar las condiciones de acogida.<\/p>\n

Este fotoreportaje de la Fira es tan solo una peque\u00f1a muestra del trabajo documental realizado a lo largo de siete meses desde junio hasta diciembre con visitas peri\u00f3dicas recogiendo testimonios, fotograf\u00edas y entrevistas en video en el Pabell\u00f3n 7B gestionado por la Fundaci\u00f3 Salut i Comunitat.<\/span><\/p>\n

7th\u00a0<\/sup>Pavilion<\/strong><\/p>\n

The busts of Zeus and Hera crown the rear entrance of the 7th\u00a0<\/sup>Pavilion of the Fira conference centre in Montju\u00efc. After the outbreak of the pandemic, the Barcelona City Council set up an emergency shelter here to house the homeless during the state of alarm. Manuel Mart\u00ednez, interested in history and architectural heritage, observes the figures every time he steps out into the courtyard to smoke, but he doesn\u2019t have the wherewithal to find out who they are. These are difficult days where he has to learn to live with people in extreme life situations and from a wide range of backgrounds.<\/p>\n

He confined himself to ‘la Fira’ at the end of March to overcome the harsh cold nights sleeping in the streets of Barcelona. He was among the first to enter the Red Cross-managed module A, offering 225 beds. The influx of people seeking refuge during those first days of the state of alarm was such that module B, managed by the Fundaci\u00f3n Salut i Comunitat, opened at the beginning of April offering a further 225 places. Some did not spend more than a night or two. Fear of crowds, insecurity (there were no divisions between the bunk beds), the feeling of control or the loss of freedom were some of the reasons behind the decision by some to return to the streets. Others simply refused to accept the norms imposed by the organisations to ensure a harmonious coexistence and were expelled.<\/p>\n

One hundred years ago, the 7th\u00a0<\/sup>Pavilion was built by Puig i Cadafalch in order to host samples of the 1929 International Exhibition. It was named the Victoria Eugenia Palace in honour of the Queen at the time, wife of Alfonso XIII. The fusion of architectural styles on the fa\u00e7ade remains intact to this day, although not so in the interior, which in its beginnings also contained figures from the classical period and has at present been left open. Over 1,300\u00a0<\/strong>men have passed through its 14,000 m2\u00a0<\/sup>in the nine months that it has been in operation.<\/p>\n

Pere\u00a0<\/strong>came from Ecuador to manage his retirement in the middle of the pandemic, but with the administrative slowdown, money has run out and at age 66 he is on the street for the first time in his life. Mohamed\u00a0<\/strong>arrived in August at Gran Canaria by boat, fleeing Mauritania; after reaching Almer\u00eda, he takes a bus to Barcelona. Erasmo\u00a0<\/strong>arrived from Honduras in February with the hope of working as a carpenter, but has found nothing more than sporadic illegal bricklaying work and ends up looking for scrap metal with a supermarket trolley on the streets of Barcelona. Baber\u00a0<\/strong>arrived from Pakistan on foot, after crossing countries such as Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria and Macedonia for six months, until he began training as a repair technician in a smartphone store owned by a fellow countryman in the Poble Sec neighbourhood. Antol\u00edn\u00a0<\/strong>had been sleeping in ATMs for 18 months in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, when the police picked him up, took him to a shelter for homeless people initially and then on to the Fira. Antonio<\/strong>, after spending five weeks hospitalised for coronavirus and other health issues, is asked by his landlady to leave the room he is renting as she is a vulnerable citizen and does not want to be exposed to the virus. Adnan<\/strong>, along with his 20-year-old son, arrives in Barcelona from Germany with a deportation order to Syria if he does not settle in Barcelona according to the United Nations refugee reception treaty. Abdel <\/strong>is a 55-year-old Spanish national in long-term unemployment and was evicted in Ciutat Meridiana for occupying the floor of a bank branch. Ricard\u00a0<\/strong>is released in the midst of a pandemic after a year and a half in prison for evasion of traffic fines. He leaves the Fira because a childhood friend invites him to Tenerife to help him rebuild his life. Juan\u00a0<\/strong>had been on the street for months due to cocaine addiction, paid for by his monthly benefits for a permanent disability caused by years working as a sailor. He manages to quit the drug during lockdown and now lives with his daughter. Marc\u00a0<\/strong>was working illegally as a waiter until 14 March, but due to lack of income caused by the lockdown, he is forced to leave his home. He uses his time at the Fira to retrain in the restoration of high-rise fa\u00e7ades, which has allowed him to find work.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach of us carries with them a curriculum vitae\u201d<\/em>, acknowledges Manuel, after spending several weeks in a pension in the Ciutat Vella district. Now he can think about the history of the 7th\u00a0<\/sup>Pavilion and what this period of time has meant to him, which he hopes will be a turning point in the direction his life has taken in recent times. \u201cHaving a roof over your head is priceless.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

According to City Council statistics, 30% of the men welcomed at the Fira are of Spanish nationality, another 30% are from the EU and the rest are from outside the EU. 55% were sleeping on the street before taking refuge at the Fira. 45% came from rented rooms, occupied dwellings or slums. The 7th\u00a0<\/sup>Pavilion has been open from 25 March to 23 December. The last 170 users have been transferred to different hotels and residences after an agreement with the City Council to improve their living conditions.<\/p>\n
