Adnan Khaled juega con ah\u00ednco al futbol en la Fira, su \u00faltimo refugio, tras vivir 6 meses en las calles de Barcelona con su hijo. Jugar con la pelota junto a alg\u00fan compa\u00f1ero del albergue a los pies del MNAC le conecta con su infancia cuando viv\u00eda en Homs, Siria, cuando a\u00fan no imaginaba que acabar\u00eda en Europa\u00a0 implorando asilo para poder ofrecer una vida digna a su familia.<\/p>\n

Simpatizante de Baaz, el partido pol\u00edtico socialista que gobierna en Siria, se lanz\u00f3 a las calles de Homs durante la primavera \u00e1rabe para reivindicar los derechos del pueblo. La represi\u00f3n y el conflicto masacr\u00f3 personas y viviendas. Su casa qued\u00f3 hecha a\u00f1icos. Enseguida abandonaron Siria para protegerse en Tr\u00edpoli, L\u00edbano. Su fecha de registro como refugiado en ACNUR se remonta al 24 de agosto de 2011. Poco despu\u00e9s soldados del r\u00e9gimen lo detienen en L\u00edbano y lo deportan a Siria para encarcelarlo por la participaci\u00f3n en la revoluci\u00f3n. Pasa 25 meses en la prisi\u00f3n de Talkalakh, periodo de tiempo que quiere borrar de su memoria. Cuando es liberado en 2013 debe pagar dinero a los soldados para regresar al L\u00edbano. Desde all\u00ed solicita ser acogido en alg\u00fan Programa de Protecci\u00f3n Internacional en Europa. Pasados m\u00e1s de 4 a\u00f1os, en febrero de 2018, recibe una respuesta favorable de la Comisi\u00f3n Interministerial de Asilo y Refugio. En marzo de ese a\u00f1o llegan a Barcelona, cuando la sociedad de Barcelona clama en las calles que quiere acoger en manifestaciones con el lema \u00abVolem Acollir\u00bb y \u00abCasa nostra casa vostra\u00bb.\u00a0 Pasan 22 d\u00edas en un centro de acogida en Manresa, tres semanas cruciales para tomar una decisi\u00f3n: quedarse en el programa o trasladarse a Alemania donde reside la familia de su mujer. Finalmente el v\u00ednculo familiar tiene m\u00e1s peso y se van a Hannover, donde solicitan asilo, que es rechazado al cabo de ocho meses. El proceso de apelaci\u00f3n tarda unos meses m\u00e1s. La negativa de la misiva viene acompa\u00f1ada de un mensaje rotundo. El lugar de acogida debe ser Espa\u00f1a, pues es el pa\u00eds de entrada a Europa, de lo contrario ser\u00e1n deportados a Siria.<\/p>\n

En febrero de este a\u00f1o Adnan Abu Khaled como as\u00ed le llaman en su casa, viene a Barcelona con su hijo Gaith de 20 a\u00f1os. El primer lugar al que se dirigen es al centro de acogida en Manresa, pero su petici\u00f3n no puede ser aceptada, deben volver a iniciar los tr\u00e1mites. Acaban durmiendo en la calle sin un lugar determinado. A veces en el centro de Barcelona otras por Poble Nou. La crisis del coronavirus ralentiza toda petici\u00f3n de acogida. En el mes de agosto son derivados al albergue de la Fira, habilitado por el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona como dispositivo de emergencia por la pandemia. A Adnan le duele recordar el calvario que ha vivido a partir de 2011, como los \u00faltimos meses en la calle junto a su hijo. \u00abHemos estado comiendo de las basuras, durmiendo en cualquier sitio hasta llegar aqu\u00ed\u00bb. Tambi\u00e9n le duele estar separado de su mujer y dos hijos, que permanecen en Alemania asustados por la posible ejecuci\u00f3n de la orden de deportaci\u00f3n, aunque con la crisis del coronavirus parece que se ha interrumpido, pero \u00bfhasta cu\u00e1ndo?<\/p>\n

Jugar a futbol en la Fira le da esperanzas. \u00abCuando corro detr\u00e1s de la pelota pienso que quiz\u00e1s nuestra situaci\u00f3n pueda resolverse\u00bb.\u00a0 Los d\u00edas pasan mientras est\u00e1 en vilo a la espera de una reuni\u00f3n con el SAIER, la Oficina de Atenci\u00f3n al Inmigrante, Emigrante y Refugiado. Una ca\u00edda reciente en el \u00faltimo partido le ha provocado una lesi\u00f3n muscular en la mu\u00f1eca. La pugna por conseguir la pelota va m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del mero juego. \u00ab\u00c9ste es mi destino. Esta pelota trae da\u00f1o y felicidad al mismo tiempo\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Actualizaci\u00f3n a 30 de Noviembre: la solicitud de asilo de Adnan Khaled y su hijo ha sido aceptada recibiendo la residencia por dos a\u00f1os en Barcelona.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The deportation to Syria or the streets of Barcelona<\/strong><\/p>\n

Adnan Khaled <\/span>eagerly plays football at the Fira, his last refuge, after spending the last six months living on the streets of Barcelona with his son. Playing ball games next to a fellow hostel user at the foot of the MNAC museum brings him back to his childhood when he lived in Homs, Syria; back then, he would never have imagined that he would end up in Europe begging for asylum to offer his family a dignified life.<\/span><\/p>\n

A supporter of the Ba\u2019ath, the ruling socialist political party in Syria, he takes to the streets of Homs during the Arab Spring to reclaim the rights of the people. Repression and conflict massacre people and homes. His own house is torn to pieces. The family soon leave Syria for Tripoli, Lebanon, to protect themselves. His date of registration as a refugeeat UNHCR dates back to 24 August 2011. Shortly afterwards, regime soldiers arrest him in Lebanon and deport him to Syria to imprison him for participating in the revolution. He spends 25 months in Talkalakh prison, a period of time he wants to erase from his memory.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When he is released in 2013 he is requested to pay money to the soldiers to return to Lebanon. From there he applies to be included in an International Protection Program in Europe. After more than fours years, in February 2018, he receives a favourable response from the Interministerial Commission for Asylum and Refuge. A month later they arrive in Barcelona, \u200b\u200bwhen the people of the city cry out in the streets in demonstration, declaring that they want to welcome refugees with the slogans, \u201cWe want to welcome\u201dand \u201cOur home is your home\u201d. They spend 22 days in a refugee centre in Manresa. Three crucial weeks to make a decision: stay in the program or move to Germany where his wife\u2019s family resides. Finally the family bond has more weight and they leave for Hanover. They apply for asylum there, which is deniedafter eight months. The appeal process takes a few more months. The letter\u2019s refusal is accompanied by a firm message: the place of asylum must be Spain, as it is the country of entry into Europe, otherwise they will be deported to Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n

In February 2020, Adnan Abu Khaled, as he was called, arrives in Barcelona with his 20-year-old son Gaith. The first place they go is the refugee centre in Manresa, but as their request cannot be accepted, they are forced to start the procedures again. They end up sleeping on the street in whatever space they can find \u2013 sometimes in the city centre, other times in Poble Nou. The coronavirus crisis has slowed down all asylum requests. In August, they are taken to the Fira hostel, set up by Barcelona City Council as an emergency resource during the pandemic. It pains Adnan to remember the ordeal he has lived through since 2011, in particular the last few months on the street with his son. \u201cWe’ve been eating out of the trash, sleeping anywhere, until we arrived here.\u201d It also hurts to be separated from his wife and two children, who are still in Germany, fearful of the possible execution of the order of deportation. The coronavirus crisis seems to have interrupted the process, but for how long?<\/span><\/p>\n

Playing football at the Fira gives him hope. \u201cWhen I chase the ball I think that maybe our situation can be resolved.\u201d The days go by while he is on hold awaiting a meeting with SAIER, the Care Service for Immigrants, Emigrants and Refugees (SAIER). A recent fall during the last game has caused a muscle injury to his wrist. The struggle to chase the balls is much more than just a game. \u201cThis is my destiny. This ball brings me pain and joy at the same time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

30 November update: the asylum application of Adnan Khaled and his son has been accepted – they will now be entitled to a two-year\u00a0residency in Barcelona.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
