His gaze lights up when he remembers that he almost lost his life in a fall during quarantine in the Terrassa shelter and that on his return from the hospital from a trip that he might not have survived, Ana had gifted him an emotional short story – something he now keeps as a small treasure.

Mohamed, a Moroccan youth who lost his job as a promoter for a bar on the Ramblas when the state of alarm was decreed, survives as best he can. He had to leave the hostel due to lack of income. His faith in Allah helps him bear the pains of life on the street such as the cold in the ATM cubicle where he sleeps, the complaints of some Sarrià residents for sleeping there or even the constant explanations to the police for having self-isolated in front of a supermarket where he begs. He gets emotional when he explains that God protects him from loneliness on the street, but he also expresses gratitude for the kindness of those who have helped him, local residents or others who have crossed his path.

Samir Pawel could not bear the idea of being locked up knowing that so many people were on the street going through hardship. He went out every afternoon with his black briefcase full of meals cooked by himself, medicines, a mobile phone that someone had given him and even money. Every day he tried to visit a different area to reach more people. One day he met Mohamed, who was also combating loneliness by sending messages from his outdated phone. Pawel gifted him a more modern one and suddenly the world opened up to him.

Marisa Müller, aghast, watched the news the days following the decree of the state of alarm. Accustomed to attending emergencies in Africa, Asia and the Middle East through Doctors Without Borders and the International Red Cross, she did not want to remain unmoved by the plight of the most vulnerable. She contacted BarcelonActua [a local NGO] to offer her own apartment to four people, who overnight went from living on the street to living in a beautiful apartment in Gràcia, while she moved to her mother’s home.

In a ghostly Barcelona, with hardly anyone walking alone or even accompanied by their pet, the homeless were all too visible. André Guimaraes drove around town in his car on Thursday afternoons, his trunk loaded with large pots and pans. He had managed to engage restaurants in Santa Eulàlia and collaborators from his self-defence fitness centre in Hospitalet de Llobregat. He would stop immediately when he spotted someone on the street and would provide them with a meal right there and then, or more than one if necessary.

Desi Rodriguez, now retired and a member of the Encuentro group of the San Oleguer parish, prepared dinner every evening for the quarantined people in front of the Fort Pienc public library. The group had grown after the state of alarm. A young Latino man had lost his job on a building site, working off the books. Another young man from Romania, who had just broken up with his girlfriend, had decided to return to his country and had kept the unused ticket in his pocket waiting for the borders to re-open. A group of sub-Saharan Africans had moved because they felt safer there. The most experienced of the group, who had also lost his job in construction, spent every afternoon in the entrance to Desi’s flat and, maintaining social distance, picked up a bag with the food that she distributed among her colleagues, who would wait for it eagerly because it had clearly been recently prepared. Every day Desi would surprise them with a different meal.

If something’s happened during quarantine, it’s that the generosity of the people and organisations sensitive to the realities of living on the street has lightened the existence of the most at risk: a glimmer of hope in the face of the tenacious adversity of sleeping rough.

<a
