The news headlines alternate between Pedro Sánchez, President of Spain, and Ada Colau, Mayor of Barcelona, explaining that it is necessary to self-isolate at home to protect ourselves, to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. Other leaders appear on the scene. In the opening speech there isn’t a single mention of the homeless.

But where does one self-isolate, when there is no roof under which to shelter during quarantine?

Silence reigns in the streets in week zero. No traffic, just the squawking of seagulls can be heard in the centre of Barcelona. The real battle is fought in the ICUs, but ER centres are under-staffed. Hospitals have collapsed and health workers clamour for more material simply to comply with hygiene protocols, the lifesaver in the fight against a disease of which very little is known.

Everything is closed until further notice, except for businesses recognised as essentials. Impromptu police checks. Hardly any pedestrians, walking from one place to the next, heads down, their faces hidden behind a mask, surveying the new space out of the corner of their eye. Fear, anguish, suspicion, uncertainty, anger, restlessness and bewilderment. Only a very few simply stand still. Deserted Barcelona reveals a latent reality. Beyond the supermarket queues, no one else is standing still. It’s just not possible. The new decree prohibits it. «What are you doing here?», a police officer questions a man sitting in a square. «I have nowhere to go,» the man replies. Some have been seen sleeping in the open due to the closing of borders, hotels and businesses, trapped in a situation they could never have imagined. Others had already been living on the street for some time. Inevitably, the unconfined take over the urban landscape.

«Do you know what the body count is today?» I am asked by a man who spends hours under a bridge, staring at an empty highway. «I used to read the newspaper in a bar with my coffee, but now I have no way of knowing what’s going on.» As of 26 March, there were 4,089. I ask him about the cardboard box a few meters away. «Yes, a man sleeps there every night,» he confirms.

Four months after the start of this new era in Spain, when the state of alarm was decreed, the number of fatalities by COVID-19 totalled 28,409. The curve of positive cases has long gone down. The figure is nowhere near the more than 500,000 deaths caused during the Civil War over a three-year period; however, the acceleration of the number of deaths in the first 40 days, from 136 on 14 March to 22,524 on 23 April, has been so fast that if it lasted at the same rate over three years, the figure would be equivalent.

While a vaccine is being discovered to combat this unseen enemy that has changed the social rules around the world, the victims of the economic crisis also increase. Government aid cannot cover all cases. It becomes all too easy to lose what has been hard earned for months or years. The most vulnerable, those without a work contract, those who have no job, those without regular documentation, or those whose income is below the minimum required for survival, are gradually added to those who were already living on the confines of society, before the crisis.

Next post >>

Other posts of the Blog «The confines of society»

This documentary project is possible thanks to the COVID-19 fund of the European Journalism Centre.

Barcelona, 11 de Abril.
