Princesses for Sale
Every spring in Mogila, Bulgaria, there is a Gypsy bride market at which virginity and honour are up for sale. Each girl’s price is agreed by the parents. Prices vary from €1,500 to €10,000, in a country where the minimum wage is barely €150. The market brings together the Kalajdzii (the Thracian tinkerers) families who carry on their tradition in spite of the fact that runaways and divorces, hitherto taboo, are becoming more frequent.
