A Spring opera confined to the streets

The posters outside the Liceu of Wagner’s mythical hero, Lohengrin, the saviour of Princess Elsa of Brabant guided by a swan, remind us that time has been suspended. Who knows how many projects have been interrupted, postponed or forgotten. The poster announces the «premiere and debut of Katherina Wagner», the great-granddaughter of Wagner himself, composer of the magnum opus, celebrated if only for its wedding march. It premiered in 1850 in Weimar, under the baton of Franz Liszt, great-great-grandfather of the debutante.

The dates shown read «19 March to 5 April» but today is 9 May, close to the start of Phase 0 in Barcelona, yet Lohengrin’s defiant, imposing gaze can still be seen on the doors of the Liceu, while under its arches a group of homeless people have been sheltering there for a while. «We moved here in those days in April when it rained heavily,» says José Manuel Santos, who resided for a few days at the Fira shelter enabled due to COVID-19, after issues at the Plaza Catalunya train station prevented him from sheltering there. However, worried about the number of people locked up in the shelter, he decided to return to the streets.

Of the 80 musicians from the Orchestra of the Liceu who performed the music of Lohengrin, one of them, the cellist Matthias Weinmann, former president of the Chiringuito de Dios, a Raval organisation dedicated to improving the lives of the homeless, has attended every week since the state of alarm decree to provide the organisation with basic products. The organisation’s activity has increased greatly due to the growing needs of this group after the closure of local soup kitchens. «I spent every week in front of the Liceuright up until Easter, but I never saw anyone», he remembers, somewhat sadly.

Those three days of incessant rain in April, just after Easter, will stand out in the memory of many as a turning point. At the foot of Arc de Triomf, Babi and Nanda were able to take shelter in a makeshift tent thanks to the donation of a large piece of plastic from a local resident. Adela was last seen in the vicinity of the post office, her bed out in the open. David’s Gothic Quarter shack couldn’t stand the first few hours of rain. The downpour forced some to stay in state-run shelters opened due to COVID-19. There were even those who took shelter in Barcelona airport, near Terminal 1, the only terminal open up until Phase 2, with just 10 flights a day.

«Some policemen threw us out of the Liceu,» Santos recalls, a few days before Phase 0 opened, which was initially scheduled for 11 May but which was postponed until 18 May. «The whole group went to the porticos on the corner of Portaferrissa Street, so we could be near the Santa Anna parish and the Augustinian nuns», which provides food to the homeless on a daily basis.

Since its doors opened in 1847, the Liceu, emblematic building in Barcelona, temple to the Catalan bourgeoisieand great witness to the Ramblas, has had its programming interrupted a number of times already: twice due to fire in 1861 and 1994, once again in 1893 due to an anarchist attack, La Canadenca strikes of 1919 also had an effect and inevitably during the Civil War. To this list we can now add what some are dubbing the dystopia of the new world in 2020 due to the coronavirus, although this isn’t the first time it’s had to close its doors due to a pandemic. The Russian flu of 1889 was the first: four turbulent months starting in December also shook the world, with a million fatalities, originating in Saint Petersburg and spreading across the globe. A parallel could be made with the current situation, with 881.000 recorded deaths from COVID-19 originating in China, although it’s important to remember that neither the world population nor scientific-technological progress are the same as they were back then.

The Lohengrin poster was withdrawn in Phase 2 to announce the new musical season, also coinciding with the reopening of Terminal 2, which had been dormant until 8 June. Slowly but surely, from Phase 0 to 2, many people who had survived on the streets once again diluted into the city. Confinement in the Liceuand so many other untraveled corners of Barcelona has been circumscribed to the state of alarm, as in an opera we see the drama of life adapted to a stage. Sometimes the ending is hopeful, at other times the drama of life continues on the street.
