A year of «Farmland Reserve»
With the arrival of tourism to Formentera, from the early 60’s, many fields were abandoned. The expansion of the tourist sector caught the native people in long working days during the summer season. The payeses, little by little they were running without the familiar support of yesteryear, nor the forces to continue cultivating the field.
The «Cens de Terres de Cultiu» programme (“Farmland Reserve”) is a pioneering initiative promoted by the Formentera Council and the Farmers Cooperative to recover the primary sector and preserve the beauty of the countryside of the island.
A group of young peasants have worked a hundred hectares for a year, thanks to the generosity of the owners who have ceded their fields to the «Farmland Reserve».
